As Skin Cancer Awareness Month, this time of year urges us all to prioritize prevention, early detection, and sun safety
Why It Matters
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., with millions of new cases each year. But here’s the good news: when detected early, most skin cancers are highly treatable. At our Great Neck and Jackson Heights locations, our board-certified providers are here to help you protect your skin with personalized care and skin screenings.
What to Look Out For
Performing monthly self-checks and knowing the ABCDEs of melanoma can help you catch suspicious changes early:
Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
Border: irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges
Color: varying shades of brown, black, or tan
Diameter: larger than a pencil eraser
Evolving: any change in size, shape, or color
If something looks or feels off trust your gut. It’s always better to be safe and get it checked.
Sun Safety Tips from Our Team
*Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ Mineral sunscreen daily even when it’s cloudy
*Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors or after sweating/swimming
*Wear wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and long sleeves
*Avoid tanning beds completely
*Seek shade, especially between 10 AM–4 PM
